Date Difference Calculator
Calculate the calendar difference between two dates in years, months and days.
Difference
- Total months
- Total weeks
- Total days
Worked example
From 15 January 2020 to 20 March 2023 is 3 years, 2 months and 5 days.
How we calculated this
This tool breaks the gap between two dates down into calendar years, months and days, different from Days Between Dates, which reports a single total day count. The end date must be on or after the start date. End-of-month dates follow the same calendar clamping used throughout this site (for example, 31 January to 1 March is treated as 1 month and 1 day, since January's 31st clamps to February's 28th or 29th first). Total months is an exact completed-month count (years × 12 + months), never an average-month approximation; total weeks and total days are the exact elapsed calendar-day count, regrouped.
What this result means
The result is the calendar difference between the two dates, broken down into years, months and days.
Common mistakes
- Entering the later date first: the calculator does not silently reorder your dates — use the swap button, or re-enter them the other way round.
