How it works

This tool adds, subtracts, multiplies, or divides two fractions using exact whole-number arithmetic, then simplifies the result to its lowest terms. It never converts your fractions to a decimal partway through the calculation, only afterwards for display. Numerators and denominators must be whole numbers, and a denominator cannot be zero. Very large numerators or denominators may exceed what a calculation like this can represent exactly.

What this result means

The result is shown as a simplified fraction, with a mixed-number, decimal and percentage equivalent underneath.

Assumptions and limitations

  • Mixed numbers are shown as a result, not accepted as an input — enter an improper fraction instead (for example 3/2, not 1 1/2).
  • There is no separate decimal-to-fraction conversion mode.
