Worked example
For 2, 4, 4, 4, 5, 5, 7, 9: mean 5, median 4.5, mode 4, range 7.
How it works
Mean is the sum of the numbers divided by how many there are. Median is the middle value once the numbers are sorted (or the average of the two middle values, for an even count). Mode is the most frequently occurring value. If every number occurs equally often (including when every number is different), there is no mode; if several numbers are tied for most frequent, all of them are shown, not just one. Range is the highest value minus the lowest. If any entry cannot be read as a number, the whole calculation stops and tells you which entry to fix.
What this result means
The mean, median, mode and range describe the centre and spread of your data set in four different ways.
