Recipe Scaler

Scale ingredient quantities in a recipe for a different number of servings.

Each line is a quantity followed by the rest of the ingredient, e.g. 2 cups flour, 1.5 tsp salt, 3 eggs, or 1 1/2 cups sugar.

Worked example

Scaling "2 cups flour" from 4 servings to 8 servings gives 4 cups flour. The unit itself never changes, only the quantity.

How it works

The Recipe Scaler multiplies each ingredient quantity by the serving scale factor.

If a recipe serves 4 people and you want 8 servings, each quantity is doubled. A quantity written as 4 cups becomes 8 cups. The unit stays the same: Xiliro never turns cups into pints or quarts for you (use the Cooking Unit Converter separately for that).

You can enter whole numbers, decimals, fractions such as 1/2, and mixed numbers such as 1 1/2. Ingredient names and their original order are preserved, and a repeated ingredient is never merged into a single line.

The calculator changes ingredient quantities only. Cooking times, pan sizes and seasoning may need separate adjustment.

What this result means

The result is your ingredient list with every quantity multiplied by the scale factor between your original and desired servings.

Assumptions and limitations

  • Units are never automatically converted — scaling never turns "cups" into "pints", it only changes the number.
  • Cooking time, equipment and method may not scale proportionally even when the ingredient quantities do.
